Hinges to Hearts - The Stanley Story That Swung Open History!

Hinges removed from windows windows at our Willoughby construction site for restoration.

There's a certain satisfaction that comes from discovering a seemingly ordinary object and then realising it's anything but, and it’s not very often that I get the chance to share exciting stories like this everyday.

It's like stumbling upon a buried treasure or finding a hidden piece of history. Such was the case during one of our current construction projects when our client unearthed a set of hinges when restoring her windows.

At first glance, they might seem like just another piece of hardware, but their origins traced back to a storied legacy of craftsmanship, innovation, and a dedication that shaped the world of tools as we know it.

These are no ordinary hinges. They are Stanley hinge.

If you're even vaguely familiar with the world of hardware and tools, the name 'Stanley' will undoubtedly resonate. This brand is a mammoth in the industry, and it stands shoulder-to-shoulder with other giants like Black and Decker, Dewalt, Bostitch, Craftsman, Porter Cable, and several more.

The Stanley saga began in 1854 when Frederick Stanley, the visionary founder, set out to create a company that would revolutionise the tool industry. But every great leader knows the value of a dedicated team, and Stanley was no exception. Among his hires was a young, 19-year-old William Hart. Hart wasn’t just another employee – he embodied the spirit of ambition and dedication.

Mr. Hart's association with the company wasn't a short-lived affair. He spent an astounding six decades with Stanley, contributing significantly to its growth and legacy. His tenure was so impactful that he went on to become one of the longest-serving Presidents/Chairmen of the corporation.

In 1919, when William Hart passed away, Stanley Works Corporation decided to honour his memory in a way that would be etched in history. They changed their corporate logo to an emblematic 'SW' (standing for Stanley Works) encapsulated by a heart – a fitting tribute to a man whose last name resonated so poignantly with the emblem chosen.

The Stanley Works encapsulated by a heart.

This logo remained the face of the Stanley Works Corporation for many years. It was only much later that the familiar notched rectangle symbol was introduced, which many recognise today.

It’s fascinating how a simple hinge can open up doors and windows to such rich history.

William Hart's story and his association with Stanley Works Corporation serve as a testament to the ideals of commitment, loyalty, and the profound impacts of lasting professional relationships. The next time you come across a Stanley tool or, in our case, a hinge, take a moment to appreciate the legacy and the stories it holds within.

Credit to Matt Goodare (DesignBuild PS Director) & our client, for finding this peace of history and passing it on, allowing me to share with you all.
